The president and CEO of Feeding Northeast Florida has announced that she’s retiring.
A search has begun to replace Susan King. The goal is to appoint the next leader of Northeast Florida’s largest nonprofit food bank and hunger relief network by the end of this year.
King will leave later this year after almost seven years leading the nonprofit operation, which helps more than 420 agencies distribute food in a 12-county area.
In a news release, she said she has been privileged to work with an extraordinary team, dedicated partners and a community that “deeply believes no neighbor should face hunger alone.”
“Together, we have built something far bigger than a food bank,” King said. “We have built a mission-driven organization focused on dignity, innovation and hope. I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished and excited for the next leader who will carry this mission forward. The opportunities ahead for Feeding Northeast Florida are even greater than those behind us.”
King was a founding board member when the organization was established in 2014. She became president and CEO in 2019 as the food bank expanded its service area from eight to 12 counties.
She created Project SHARE during the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing together local restaurants, Florida Blue and community partners to prepare and distribute thousands of meals to vulnerable residents while supporting displaced hospitality workers.
She also led several initiatives that expanded the food bank’s impact, including the Corner Market mobile pantry program and the development of its new $27 million Jacksonville headquarters.
“Susan has helped transform Feeding Northeast Florida into one of the region’s most impactful nonprofit organizations,” Dipak Rajhansa, chairperson of the Feeding Northeast Florida board, said in the news release. “Her leadership, compassion and vision strengthened our ability to serve neighbors facing hunger while building a culture rooted in collaboration, innovation and service. Because of Susan’s leadership, Feeding Northeast Florida enters this transition from a position of strength.”
King said that she will remain until a successor is hired. A search committee appointed by the Feeding Northeast Florida board will oversee the recruitment process.
