A historic marker could be erected to honor the victims of the racist mass shooting at the Dollar General store in Jacksonville’s New Town neighborhood nearly a year ago.

If approved by the Jacksonville City Council, a marker would be installed at Kings Road and Canal Street on Aug. 25, a day before the first anniversary of the shooting, when a white gunman took the lives of three Black people.

The 21-year-old shooter from Clay County left behind writings filled with white supremacist ideology. He killed Dollar General employee Anolt “AJ” Laguerre Jr., along with Jerrald Gallion and Angela Carr.

The City Council legislation says the design, installation and maintenance of the marker would be paid with up to $10,000 set aside for District 10 from the Special Committee on Parks and Quality of Life.

The measure would need to be approved by City Council on Tuesday to make the installation deadline.
