USS Cooperstown headed for Naval Station Mayport

The USS Cooperstown will head to its homeport at Naval Station Mayport after its commissioning last weekend in New York City.

The Navy’s newest littoral combat ship is named for Cooperstown, New York, home to the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. The ship honors the 70 Hall of Famers who served during the Civil War, World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

That list includes Army Capt. Ty Cobb, who fought in the World War I; Army-Air Force Sgt. Joe DiMaggio and Army Lt. Jackie Robinson, who served during World War II; Marine Lt. Ted Williams, who served as a Naval Aviator in World War II; and Army Private Willie Mays, who fought in Korea.

Hall of Famers Joe Torre and Johnny Bench took part in the ceremony Saturday.
