As vacationers head out on Labor Day weekend, the crush of travelers is already affecting Jacksonville International Airport.

According to the airport’s online parking status board, the daily garage was 100% filled as of Thursday afternoon; its daily surface lot was at 90%; and the hourly garage was close behind at 78%.

But by the next big holiday travel weekend — Thanksgiving — 2,000 more spaces are expected to be available as a third parking garage opens next to the existing two, at an estimated cost of $102 million.

There is no specific opening date for the new 151,000-square-foot garage, which will have six levels, airport authority spokesperson Greg Willis said Thursday. The garage will open sometime in November before the Thanksgiving holiday, he said.

Airport travelers have dealt with a year’s worth of construction for the airport’s third garage. Drivers have been forced to drive around fencing blocking the new site, which is on former surface parking areas.

Balfour Beatty Construction LLC is building the garage on a 3-acre site south of an existing daily garage, which will bring the airport up to 10,800 total parking spaces.

Next on the airport’s grand opening agenda is the new Concourse B, under construction since spring 2024 between existing concourses A and C. The first flights will leave the new concourse Jan. 28.

Concourse B will include multiple restaurants, a pet relief area and family-friendly seating. It will offer a children’s play area as well as new shopping and dining options.

Frequent flyers will have a new Delta Sky Club, which will be twice as large as the current one. A new Club JAX, which is a priority passenger lounge, also will double the square footage offered previously in the terminal.

The 165,000-square-foot building is costing $340 million, paid for through airline ticket taxes and Federal Aviation Administration trust funds.

American Airlines will use five of the six new gates. The airport will use the last one for other flights as needed.

Meanwhile, work continues to repair damage done after fire struck the third deck of the hourly parking garage in mid-May last year, forcing the airport to shut down for much of that afternoon.

Willis said the reconstructed sections on the third and fourth decks should open next summer, restoring 300-plus spots lost to fire damage.
