Northeast Florida communities will remember the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks with memorials and other events Friday and Saturday. Here’s a summary of the observances.
Friday
Green Cove Springs: A remembrance and reflection is planned at 9:30 a.m. at the Spring Park gazebo. Clay County Fire Rescue, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies will participate in a march through downtown Green Cove Springs starting at 9:15 a.m. and ending with the ceremony. During the ceremony, the names of the more than 400 firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency responders who died on that day 25 years ago will be read out. A local bagpipe group will play Amazing Grace to conclude the ceremony.

Jacksonville: Firefighters and law enforcement officers from across the area will join at 11 a.m. for the second annual Jacksonville Firefighter 9/11 Stair Climb at VyStar Ballpark, 301 A Philip Randolph Blvd. They will climb the stairs in remembrance of the first responders who answered the call at the World Trade Centers that morning and made the ultimate sacrifice. Families of first responders and others can support the stair climbers. Gates open at 10 a.m.
Jacksonville International Airport: The security checkpoint will briefly close at 8:46 a.m. to pay tribute to the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and airport officials will hold the moment of silence after a presentation from the TSA’s honor guard.
Nassau County: The Sheriff’s Office will host a memorial ceremony at 9 a.m. The ceremony will feature remarks from Sheriff Bill Leeper and Fire Chief Brady Rigdon, at the Law Enforcement Memorial at 77151 Citizens Circle in Yulee.

Naval Station Mayport: Naval Station Mayport Sailors, military security forces and first responders will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 8 a.m. at the base headquarterss. The event is for base personnel and visitors only.
Putnam County: The Putnam County Fire Rescue Honor Guard will hold its annual remembrance ceremony at 9:50 a.m. at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, 118 Fairgrounds Road in East Palatka. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will join the ceremony with the Palatka fire and police departments.
St. Augustine: A ceremony is planned at 8 a.m. at the Plaza de la Constitución, the site of the city’s first remembrance event in 2002. The live-streamed 15-minute program will include music, the presentation of colors by a multiagency honor guard, an invocation and remarks by retired Fire Department of New York Capt. Chris Garaizar. A moment of silence will be observed at 8:45 a.m., coinciding with the first plane impacting the first tower of the World Trade Center in 2001. The ceremony will conclude with bagpipes and drums playing Amazing Grace.
University of North Florida: The nonprofit 9/11 Day will host a regional food drive at the University of North Florida Arena as part of a national initiative to make the anniversary a day of unity and service. All volunteers have registered, and no more help is needed. Local volunteers will come together to pack 295,750 meals for donation to Feeding Northeast Florida, part of a 50-city effort to mobilize 50,000 volunteers to pack 17 million meals nationwide.
VyStar Volunteer Resource Center: A 9/11 Day of Service is set for 10 a.m. at the new VyStar Volunteer Resource Center at Feeding Northeast Florida, 5245 Old Kings Road. Credit Union employees and others will be sorting food for local families at the event.
Saturday
Jacksonville National Cemetery: Volunteers will gather from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, as part of a 9/11 Day of Service & Remembrance. They will clean and restore headstones and beautify the grounds to honor the people who lost their lives, as well as the military members and first responders who answered the distress call in the days and years that followed. The event is organized by Carry The Load, which is also organizing similar events at 140-plus cemeteries nationwide.
