A thought-provoking play, an Asian food market Downtown, and a celebration of music on vinyl are What to Do this weekend.

American Son

All weekend

The 5 & Dime | Arlington

This one is heavy. The 5 & Dime presents American Son, a searing, high-tension drama written by Christopher Demos-Brown and directed by Rhodie Jackson. Set over the course of a single night, the story follows two parents searching for answers at a police station after their Black teenage son goes missing. Thought-provoking and impactful, this performance will definitely stay with you long after the lights go up.

Asian Night Market

Friday and Saturday

RiversEdge Park | Downtown Jacksonville, Southbank

I loved this event back when it was held in a parking lot along Beach Boulevard, so this upgrade to the Downtown riverfront sounds amazing! This long-standing monthly market brings together authentic street food from the Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Cambodia and Vietnam. Bring a few friends, grab bites from a couple of stalls, and hang out by the water to watch the sunset. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a few dolphins playing in the river.

5 p.m. – 10 p.m. | 2010 Prudential Drive | Free and open to the public | More info

Jax Summer Record Fair

Sunday

Phoenix Arts District | Jacksonville

Calling all vinyl lovers! The Jax Summer Record Fair is back, bringing 40+ vendors with thousands of records, CDs, cassettes and music-themed collectibles. While this fair is usually hosted at Myrtle Avenue Brewing, organizers wisely moved the summer edition into the fully air-conditioned Liberty Building over in the Phoenix Arts & Innovation District so nobody melts (and no records are damaged) in the August heat. There will be all-vinyl DJs spinning all day, plus beer, wine, and food for purchase. It’s totally free to drop in, but why not dig around for a new album for yourself or the vinyl enthusiast in your life?

11 a.m. – 6 p.m. | 2336 N. Liberty St. | Free and open to the public | More info
