The MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation awarded over $125,000 in college scholarships to about 50 students in grades 5 to 12 last week. The foundation helps kids living in Jacksonville’s underserved neighborhoods, particularly in the 32209 ZIP code, reach their full potential. The scholarships will help many of them become the first in their families to attend college. Founder MaliVai Washington says, “We’re helping to break generational cycles of poverty by equipping young people with the tools, encouragement and opportunities they need to succeed.” Over the foundation’s 29 years, it has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to Jacksonville students.
