Last night, the city of St. Augustine Beach acknowledged February as Black History Month for the first time since the city was incorporated in the 1950s. The city previously signed onto a joint proclamation with neighboring governments, but Mayor Dylan Rumrell told Jacksonville Today he was shocked to find the city had never made its own recognition. The city’s beaches were the site of protests during the Civil Rights Movement, where activists fought to integrate the whites-only beaches.
