The University of North Florida is adding a doctoral program in computing, its first Ph.D. program.

The program will offer students an advanced, research-based education in computing to prepare them for research and development roles in private and public sectors and for collegiate academic positions.

The curriculum will focus on intelligent systems and cybersecurity, preparing students to conduct research and study a wide range of computing topics, including artificial intelligence, data mining, computer security and algorithms, UNF said in a news release. Concentrations in cybersecurity and intelligent systems will be available.

UNF already offers doctoral degrees such as a doctor of nursing practice and a doctor of education. The new Ph.D. in computing will be the school’s first doctor of philosophy degree.

“As UNF’s first Ph.D. program, this serves as an important step in UNF’s evolution as a top research university,” William “Chip” Klostermeyer, dean of UNF’s College of Computing, Engineering and Construction, said in the news release. “It will help us recruit new faculty and students as well as enable new partnerships with local industry, other universities and funding agencies.”
