Two people were killed Monday when their small plane crashed shortly after taking off from the Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine.
The Florida Highway Patrol said in an initial crash report that the two people on board were trying to return to the airport after having an unknown issue about 12:11 p.m. The National Transportation Safety Board identified the plane that crashed as a Mooney M20 aircraft.
The names and ages of the victims were not immediately released.
The attempt to return to the airport failed and the plane went down in the woods near County Road 312 and U.S. 1.
Officials said the two people killed were the only people on board and no one was injured on the ground.
The crash is under investigation by the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration.
