Boy killed after dog chases him into traffic

A 12-year-old boy is dead after a car hit him as he ran from a dog, police said.

The boy and his brother were walking to a school bus stop Friday in the Hyde Park area of Jacksonville’s Westside when a dog began chasing them on Lane Avenue.

Police did not say what kind of dog it was or why it was running loose.

One boy stopped, but his 12-year-old brother continued running and ended up in the road just south of Wiley Road, police said.

The boy ran into traffic, and a Chevrolet Cruz headed south on Lane Avenue South hit him, a witness told police.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department took the boy to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The boy’s death was the city’s 126th traffic fatality so far this year, police said.

The driver of the Chevrolet remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said.
