Habitat for Humanity of St. Johns County is looking for homeowners for homes in the organization’s newest neighborhood.
Of the 36 homes in the Volusia Woods community in St. Augustine, Habitat leaders hope to find owners for the four unoccupied homes by the holidays.
In a county where the median home cost is over $500,000, the affordable units built by Habitat for Humanity cost less than $300,000.
“There are not free or low-quality homes,” CEO Malinda Everson says. “Habitat is able to keep the costs of construction down through strategic partnerships, nonprofit financing, and innovative building methods.”
Volusia Woods sold its first home last September. Funding for the neighborhood came in part from St. Johns County allocating roughly $1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021. St. Johns County also chipped in an additional $264,000 from the county’s Affordable Housing Grant Program.
Habitat qualifications
Qualifications to apply for Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program include:
- Being a U.S. citizen
- Not already owning a home
- Having a credit score higher than 640
- Meeting Habitat’s income requirements
Habitat for Humanity St. Johns County requires that homeowners meet salary requirements based on the number of individuals in a home. A family of four, for example, must have a gross household income of at least $54,350 but no more than $130,440.
Habitat St. Johns offers downpayment assistance, and additional assistance is available to advance the organization’s goal of filling the remaining vacant homes by the holidays.
