A fire Saturday night decimated Streeter Acclaimed Kitchen, a popular Southern soul food restaurant open only 17 months in the Glynlea community on the Southside.
Owner and chef Johnathan Streeter has started a GoFundMe site to help fund a place to start over and keep his staff employed after learning that his Crane Avenue business cannot be rebuilt after the blaze.
The restaurant’s menu included wings, crab cakes, pot roast and smothered pork chops for dine-in and take-out services. He said he noticed a burning smell Saturday afternoon, then left at 7 p.m. He was called at 9:30 p.m. and told his restaurant was on fire. He said he ultimately learned the cause was an electrical issue.
Posting the next morning on Facebook, Streeter said sometimes no one knows why things happen.
“I’m sitting just thinking like I can’t believe this is happening to me. From selling my first $10 plates four years ago to building my name in catering, to building my name with my restaurant in this city,” Streeter wrote. “A lot of ups and downs in this industry. I’m writing this with tears because it’s been so many times I’ve wanted to give up but can’t. … I’m praying to the most almighty that everything I worked so hard for isn’t over.”
The Southern soul food spot opened in early 2025 at the end of one of three small retail strip centers at Crane Avenue and Singapore Road. It had a small dining room up front and a big kitchen in back. A rear section, where the damage was concentrated, carried home to-go containers, cleaning supplies and other items, storefront manager Riva Kimbrough told Jacksonville Today news partner News4Jax.
Streeter said that the lease on the building runs until 2029, but he hopes to end that and seek out a new site so he can keep his staff “supported,” he wrote on his GoFundMe page.
“Payroll and relocation costs are my top priorities right now,” he wrote. “Your support will help me cover these urgent expenses and give us a chance to start fresh. No donation is too big or too small— I am grateful for every bit of help. Thank you, Duval, for your support and encouragement.”
In a Facebook video he recorded late Sunday, Streeter said the restaurant was “doing pretty good, day in and day out, staying pretty busy.” And the business plans to continue catering. Streeter said he and his staff still plan to cater a black tie event in September.
“We are not done,” he said. “We are still working. This is just one rock that’s stopped progress for a little bit.”
Streeter said he is also working on doing a plate sale later this week, selling some of his menu items from a temporary location on the Southside.
