Murray Hill drag bar and restaurant Hamburger Mary’s closed abruptly last week.
The restaurant opened last spring at 947 Edgewood Ave. S., a year and a half after a devastating fire destroyed the chain’s previous Jacksonville location on Beach Boulevard.

Customers learned about the closure from a handwritten sign posted on the door. Court records show a judge issued the business an eviction order July 13, and the space is already listed for lease.
Owner Jordyn Shepherd publicly posted online about the restaurant’s financial difficulties in recent months. She created a GoFundMe page on July 5 seeking $7,000 in donations to help keep Hamburger Mary’s open, saying the money would go toward paying for rent, operating expenses and repairing the air conditioning. She similarly asked for donations from the public in March.
On the fundraising page, Shepherd also addressed rumors that she has been using the restaurant’s money to live a “lavish lifestyle.” A Facebook page called Hamburger Mary’s Jacksonville Victims has perpetuated those rumors and shared a number of allegations that Shepherd has repeatedly failed to pay employees. Shepherd has denied those allegations.
