Jacksonville City Council has decided to add the Brooklyn neighborhood to areas where bars can sell alcohol until 3 a.m.

Councilman Jimmy Peluso introduced the bill to bring the extended hours to his district. Council approved it 14-4 on Tuesday.

The vote followed council’s decision Feb. 24 to extend alcohol sales to 3 a.m. — up from 2 a.m. — in the NorthCore, Central Core and Sports and Entertainment District.

Not everyone was on board with the Brooklyn vote. Councilman Ron Salem voiced opposition, saying he believed that the expansion was happening too soon and that council should wait for more data before moving forward.

Councilman Rahman Johnson held a notice meeting earlier in the day focused on gathering data to assess the current effectiveness of the extended hours.

“In six months, the data will come back and determine what we will do to have a real entertainment district,” Johnson said.

The measure passed despite the opposition.
