JSO officer accused of stealing woman’s handbag

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrested an officer accused of stealing a woman’s handbag and discarding it behind a Mandarin apartment complex.

A woman whom Officer Shane Metz arrested in December reported March 20 that she didn’t get her handbag back when she was released, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Detectives discovered that Metz didn’t submit the woman’s handbag as personal property when she was booked into the jail. He searched the woman’s bag and discarded it in a dumpster at a Mandarin apartment complex.

On March 27, Metz was arrested on a charge of petty theft and immediately resigned.

Metz was employed with the agency for two years and seven months.
