The Wells Fargo name is gone from the Downtown skyline.
The name atop the former Wells Fargo Center was removed Sunday. A helicopter flew away each of the 20 letters and deposited them at a lot across from the Maxwell House Coffee plant on East Bay Street.
Wells Fargo has been downsizing its leased space and decided not to retain its naming rights. An entity managed by Argentic Investment Management LLC of New York City said in April that it had acquired the building at 1 Independent Drive and would market it a new anchor tenant.
The 37-story building opened in 1975 as the Independent Life Building.
