The Shands Bridge won’t be closed next weekend after all.

The Florida Department of Transportation closed the bridge the past two weekends to replace grating, leading to traffic tie-ups in Clay and St. Johns counties. But the work is now finished, FDOT said.

The bridge is a popular route from the west side of the St. Johns River to St. Augustine. With the bridge closed, drivers had to detour several miles on U.S. 17, Interstate 295 and State Road 13.

FDOT originally said the bridge would close next weekend if necessary. The project was completed early due to favorable weather and round-the-clock work, FDOT said.
