“We understand how important this service is to the community,” JTA CEO Nat Ford Sr. said in a news release. “We’re working with our partners both to reduce the time the vessel is unavailable to our customers, while ensuring that the Ferry will provide the best possible service for years to come.”

The St. Johns River Ferry connects connects the north and south ends of State Road A1A, linking Mayport Village and Fort George Island. The trip takes roughly five minutes and departs every half hour.

The ferry was shut down for three months last year for maintenance. In November, it expanded its hours to 6 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. due to growing demand.
