A major Arlington thoroughfare will get a major renovation starting in the next few days.

The $26 million resurfacing of the Arlington Expressway, from the Mathews Bridge to Southside Boulevard, will take about a year and a half. The expressway handles an average 54,000 vehicles a day

The project includes milling and resurfacing the expressway and its service roads, plus new signs, improved pavement markings and pedestrian safety upgrades, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The state will remove the Colcord Avenue exit, which is east of the University Boulevard overpass. The project also will renovate the Red Bay Branch bridges east of Arlington Road on the north and south service roads, with detours in place during the reconstruction.

Drivers can expect lane closures at night but not during peak travel times, holidays or special event days, the FDOT says.
