JTA takes first steps with city to solve financial troubles

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority is preparing to take $30 million appropriated for major projects to pay down its debts, with the authority’s board approving the move at a meeting Wednesday. 

The measure, which requires City Council approval, would mark the first step in how the authority uses hundreds of millions of dollars in Local Option Gas Tax funds.

Council members will deliberate Ordinance 2026-0780 in coming weeks, which would serve as final approval on allowing JTA to use the $30 million. JTA said it would pay down a $25 million line of credit and avoid interest payments on that debt, with the requirement it pays back the $30 million by 2037.
