Green Cove mayor resigns, citing work obligations

The mayor of Green Cove Springs has resigned effective immediately, also leaving his City Council seat.

Thomas Smith informed the city manager of his immediate resignation Tuesday, indicating that his “evolving work-related obligations have made it no longer possible for him to continue fulfilling the duties of public office,” according to a news release.

In his message to the city manager, Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the residents, calling it an “incredible honor” as he acknowledged the trust placed in him by the community.

Green Cove Springs’ City Council has five members, all elected at large to three-year terms. The mayor and vice mayor are elected by the council and serve in those positions for one year.

Smith was elected to office in April 2022, then reelected in April of this year for his second term in Council Seat 4. He is listed on LinkedIn as an advisory manager in Deloitte’s Risk & Financial Advisory GPS sector.

The City Council was expected to select a new mayor and vice mayor Tuesday night.

A special election will be needed to fill the vacant council seat.
