President-elect Donald Trump is busy filling positions in his cabinet as he prepares to return to the White House in January, and he is nominating two Florida politicians for important roles.
Trump chose Rep. Michael Waltz, who represents parts of St. Johns and Putnam counties, as national security adviser, and he has reportedly landed on Sen. Marco Rubio for secretary of state, although Trump himself hasn’t confirmed those reports.
Rubio, a Miami native, has represented Florida in the U.S. Senate since 2011 and was most recently reelected for another six-year term in 2022.
Waltz, who grew up in Jacksonville and lives in St. Johns County, has been in office since 2019 and was reelected Nov. 5 for another two-year term.
Waltz previously served in the Army and National Guard, where he was part of the Green Berets. He also worked as defense policy director in the Pentagon and currently serves on the House’s China Task Force.
If the Senate approves the nominations, Gov. Ron DeSantis has the power to appoint Rubio’s replacement, who would serve in the Senate until 2026. For Waltz’s vacancy, a special election would allow District 6 constituents to choose their new representative.
