A Jacksonville corrections officer is behind bars on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter after a crash that killed another driver.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m. on Nov. 12 at Lane Avenue South and San Juan avenues. Corrections Officer Cashius Barry Edwards was driving a Toyota Camry at “a very high rate of speed” and hit a Mitsubishi SUV headed south on Lane Avenue, Sheriff T.K. Waters said Tuesday.

The Mitsubishi driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not release the driver’s identity. Edwards, 28, was hurt, Waters said.
The Sheriff’s Office hired Edwards in 2017. He is the eighth Sheriff’s Office employee arrested in 2023 and the third charged with DUI.
“Never in my tenure with this agency has an officer been arrested for DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide,” Waters said. “And as your sheriff, and a person who has spent over half of his life devoted to this agency and this community, as a human being, I am devastated.”

Edwards has been suspended without pay and faces administrative review after his criminal case is done, Waters said. Each charge carries up to a 15-year prison sentence. He remains jailed on $200,000 bail after his Sunday arrest, jail records show.
This was the 163rd traffic fatality so far this year, police said.
