Power from the nation’s first new nuclear power plant in three decades began flowing into the JEA’s lines Monday morning.

The JEA confirmed that Unit 3 of Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro, Georgia, entered commercial service at 10 a.m. It will funnel 250 megawatts of electricity into the utility systems it serves in Georgia and Florida.

JEA’s 2021 annual discourse report says the utility estimated it will pay $3.369 billion in capital costs for the $30.34 billion construction of the nuclear plant. That payment is through a power purchase agreement with one of the four Vogtle co-owners, Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia.

Unit 3 passed final testing last week. Vogtle Unit 4 could enter commercial operation late this year or early in 2024, JEA said.
