Seize the Clay Workshop

Standout local ceramics artist Mark Lester leads Seize the Clay, a workshop at MOCA Jacksonville that invites students of all skill levels to carpe ceramics. In this new monthly workshop, students will have the opportunity to develop their hand-building and glazing skills. Each attendee will get to kiln fire one small piece per class. Seize the Clay is held on Saturday from 1 p.m -3 p.m. Tickets are $20 for members and $30 for non-members. Tickets and more info here.

Bab’s Lab Grand Slam

On Saturday evening, narrative-performance guru Barbara Colaciello’s popular Bab’s Labs Story Slam series brings together an all-star crew of recent story slam winners for the grand slam of friendly storytelling competitions. Each member of the storyteller lineup — Anna Jacobson, Kimberly Luft, Johnny Masiulewicz, Jason Rothmary Strickland and Kathy Wachala — will tell a five-minute story based on the theme music. Three-time Grammy-winner, the Duval-bred jazz drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. returns to lead his popular Jazz Jam series at Wildcrafters in Riverside. For Sunday’s jam (the first of three on successive Sundays), Owens Jr. teams with pianist and fellow Grammy-winner Liston Gregory III and local ace of the bass Stan Piper for an improvisational masterclass. The jam kicks off at 7 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. Get there early as space will be in high-demand. More info here.
