The next step in expansion of Jacksonville International Airport happened Friday morning when the last girder was put in place for the airport’s new Concourse B.
When the concourse opens late next year, American Airlines will occupy five of the six new gates that will be mixed with new restaurants and other retail, airport officials said.
Balfour Beatty, the construction company managing the project, joined Jacksonville Aviation Authority officials at the traditional “topping-off” ceremony, when a tree attached to an American flag placed atop the last piece of the concourse’s steel structure.
Now comes about 14 more months of construction to finish the concourse’s exterior and prep it for use by airlines, passengers and some new staff, aviation authority spokesperson Greg Willis said.
“A lot of the new hires will be associated with new concessions/restaurants coming into the terminal,” Willis said in an email to Jacksonville Today. “A lot needs to be done — if you think of the structure as a human body, today, we completed the skeleton. The rest of the work now needs to be done (roof, plumbing and electrical installation in the structure, drywalling, etc.).”

The airport’s new Concourse B
Construction began in the spring of 2024 on the new $300 million terminal, adding to 20 gates on Concourses A and C. The federal government is paying for the concourse through airline ticket taxes and Federal Aviation Administration trust funds, airport officials said.
The new concourse will consist of three levels with about 165,000 total square feet.
The work comes as a third parking garage is under construction next to the existing two, at an estimated cost of $100 million.
The parking structure will include changes to the rental car pickup and return area, which will reduce traffic near the terminal. Construction is estimated to finish in late 2026, officials said.
