All weekend
Gutenberg! The Musical
The 5 & Dime Theatre Co. | Regency
Bud and Doug are best friends, die-hard theatre nerds, and the masterminds behind the most bizarre musical you’ve never imagined. In this outrageous two-man spoof, they throw together a backers’ audition for their latest obsession: a full-blown spectacle about none other than Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press. It’s fast-paced, ridiculous, and packed with laughs.
I have a soft spot for this show: 20 years ago, I stumbled on it in New York during my first trip there as an adult. My friend and I spotted a chalkboard sign outside the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre — “Gutenberg! The Musical LIVE!” — and joked, “Like, Steve Guttenberg?” We decided to catch the matinee, knowing nothing. (This was pre-smartphone, so no Googling reviews on the sidewalk, but we figured it was at UCB, so it had to be funny.) And it was. Hilarious, actually. Now, two decades later, I can’t wait to see it again — this time right here in my hometown.
10131 Atlantic Blvd.; Friday and Saturday: 8 p.m.; Sunday: 2 p.m.; Tickets: $27; Tickets and more info.

Saturday
Horseshoe Crabs: Living Fossils
Fernandina Fossils | Fernandina Beach
Horseshoe crabs have been around for more than 400 million years, making them one of Earth’s true “living fossils.” I think they’re amazing — and their blue blood has even played a lifesaving role in modern medicine. On Saturday, come out for an adult-focused, hands-on session to explore these incredible creatures and the work of Amelia Island’s Horseshoe Crab Watch team, and learn ways to help protect these ancient survivors. A kid-focused session will be offered on Sept. 28.
508 Ash St., Fernandina Beach.; Noon; Tickets are free with a donation (of fossils, time or funds); Registration and more info.

Saturday
Beaches Record Fair
Southern Swells Brewing Co. | Jacksonville Beach
If flipping through crates of vinyl with a cold beer in hand sounds like a good time, then the Beaches Record Fair at Southern Swells is the place to be this weekend. Every month, local vendors bring in crates of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes, turning the brewery into a music treasure hunt — maybe you’ll score that record you’ve been chasing, or discover something you didn’t even know you wanted. Either way, it’s a chill afternoon of music and community.
1312 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach; Free to attend; 1-5 p.m. More info.
