You’ll soon have to pay more if you park illegally in St. Augustine.
The city is raising fines for illegal parking to $100 from $35.
The increase applies to drivers parking downtown where they shouldn’t — like along yellow curbs, in front of fire hydrants or loading zones, or blocking driveways. The increase does not include expired meters.
The City Commission increased the fines after a public hearing Monday. Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline says the increase was necessary.
“I’m very much in favor of this because I do believe there needs to be an “ouch” factor,” Sikes-Kline said. “The penalty has to hurt a little bit for it to be effective. So, that is why I’m in favor.”
The fines apply in the historic downtown core, between Old Mission Avenue, South Street, the Matanzas River and San Sabastian River.
The city plans to refresh the color on yellow curbs, put up signs about the $100 fines and have the new fees enforced by the time of the popular Nights of Lights event begins in November.
