The State Attorney’s Office has refiled charges in the case revolving around a 2024 fake St. Johns County voter guide. The refiling comes after a circuit court judge dismissed charges on largely procedural grounds.
Five people are charged with misdemeanors for allegedly distributing a voter guide falsely designed to look like the St. Johns County Republican Executive Committee’s slate card. Those people are political consultant Brianna Jordan, Jamie Johnson and three St. Johns elected officials — County Commissioners Sarah Arnold and Christian Whitehurst and St. Augustine Beach City Commissioner Dylan Rumrell.
All five individuals face misdemeanor charges of conspiracy and falsely representing a voter guide.
The charges were previously filed in Florida’s 8th Judicial Circuit Court, but Judge William Davis dismissed them. He argued that the circuit court did not have jurisdiction over the misdemeanor charges.
Along with those dismissals, Jordan’s felony charges for evidence tampering were also discarded.
Testimony from a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigator alleged that Jordan burned a number of the fraudulent voter guides, but the circuit court judge argued that, as copies of the guide still exist as evidence, her alleged burning of some of the guides did not constitute evidence tampering.
The felony charge was dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be refiled. Jordan’s misdemeanor charges, however, have been refiled along with the other defendants in the case.
Voter guide case moving forward
The case is now under the jurisdiction of the St. Johns County Court Judge Casey Woolsey.
Arnold, Rumrell and Whitehurst also retain, for now, their elected positions, despite the St. Johns County Commission writing a letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis requesting the removal of the two county commissioners.
Arnold chose not to run for reelection and will be replaced by incoming County Commissioner Martin Pyszczymuka later this month. Whitehurst is up for reelection in 2028, as is Rumrell in St. Augustine Beach.
