Duval County Public Schools says it has removed Fletcher High School’s girls volleyball coach as it investigates “inappropriate behavior” by student-athletes.

The district gave an update on the investigation Thursday:

On Wednesday, Principal Ledford met with members of Fletcher High School’s girls volleyball team and their families to discuss the school’s investigation into reports of unsupervised and inappropriate behavior — both on and off campus — among student-athletes. School leaders made clear that this behavior is unacceptable and school disciplinary measures are being implemented according to the Student Code of Conduct.

Additionally, the District is also investigating concerns involving the team’s former coach, who has been removed from the position while the investigation remains ongoing. Because this is an active investigation, we are unable to provide additional details at this time.

Principal Ledford will continue to communicate directly with impacted students and families and provide updates as appropriate.

On Tuesday, the district confirmed the investigation, saying it is “limited in the information it can share at this time. Any appropriate action will be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation.”

Some parents are concerned after hearing about the investigation, and one of those parents just enrolled her son in the school Tuesday.

“I’m wondering if I made the wrong choice,” she said. “He previously was not in a brick-and-mortar school; he was doing virtual, but we made the choice to [enroll] him and I don’t know about that now.”

She said even though she’s heard good things about Fletcher High School, she’s now concerned about how her son will transition to a classroom filled with students now with the ongoing investigation.

“Bullying has always been something on my mind,” she said. “I decided for this school because it had such good grades … so bullying is now at the top of that list.”
