State Rep. Angie Nixon, a Democrat who represents part of Jacksonville, is aiming for federal office after her term in the Florida Legislature ends this November.

Nixon is kicking off her campaign for U.S. Senate on Thursday, going up against current Sen. Ashley Moody, a Republican.

Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed Moody to one of Florida’s two Senate seats last January to replace Marco Rubio, who left to join the Trump administration as secretary of state.

Moody will have to be elected this year to keep her seat. Nixon will go up against several other Democrats in a primary election on Aug. 18.
