Utility construction will disrupt traffic on State Road A1A South near the St. Augustine Amphitheatre starting next Monday.
St. Johns County will begin work Jan. 12 on a $500,000 project to relocate a 12-inch water main.
County officials say moving the water main will allow for the installation of a new pedestrian crossing signal near the Amphitheatre. In addition to the work on the water main, crews plan to resurface the stretch of A1A and fix up the sidewalks and curbs.
Fixing up the sidewalk and adding a new pedestrian signal is expected to make pedestrians safety and improve traffic flow during events at the 5,000-seat St. Augustine Amphitheatre.
The roughly 800-foot construction area begins just south of Casanova Road and ends at Crassoldi Street.
Construction is expected to last three to four weeks, depending on weather conditions.
During that time, cars and trucks will still be able to go down the affected portion of A1A South, but drivers should expect delays.
Cyclists will be detoured down neighborhood roads west of A1A South, across from the Amphitheatre. Pedestrian walkways will be shifted to avoid construction.
