The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man on charges of DUI manslaughter after a crash that killed a teacher and his 1-year-old son on Baymeadows Road in May.
Logan Fletcher Park, 24, turned himself in Sunday after an investigation.
Detectives said Park was driving drunk May 16, when his car hit math teacher Mitchell Patch and his son as they were leaving the Wicked Barley Brewing Co.
Park was taken to a hospital, where his blood alcohol level was 0.107, well above the legal limit.
The Sheriff’s Office got a warrant for Park’s arrest after an investigation with the State Attorney’s Office. Traffic homicide investigations often take time to gather sufficient evidence for an arrest.
Safety concerns after crash
The incident has raised concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety in the area. City Councilman Joe Carlucci has been pushing for safety changes.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s evaluation of Baymeadows Road at Goodby’s Executive Drive (across from Wicked Barley) found there had been 12 crashes there since 2020. Two of the crashes involved pedestrians, along with a bicyclist.
The report recommends that a pedestrian hybrid beacon crosswalk and refuge island be added in the area.
“Engineers at FDOT will be working on design and construction costs for this project,” Carlucci said in a news release. “There are more steps to take — but I want to reassure my constituents that these steps will be taken with urgency.”
