A car fire on Friday that spread to about 50 other vehicles has heavily damaged the hourly parking garage at Jacksonville International Airport. The fire, which started on the third deck of the garage, caused partial collapses of the parking structure. Its cause is still unknown.

Crews are working to determine whether parts of the garage are safe enough for cars to be driven out. “We believe certain areas will be deemed safe and cleared later this week,” an airport spokesman said Sunday.

In the meantime, the airport has set up this form for people whose cars are stuck in the garage to sign up for updates.

While the damage continues to be assessed, the airport will be short thousands of parking spots. “Travelers with flights over the next few days, weeks and months are encouraged to seek alternative accommodation instead of on-airport parking,” the spokesman said.
