Construction will begin early next year on a larger Clay County animal shelter near Fleming Island.
The current shelter in Green Cove Springs has only 65 cat cages and kennels and pens for 76 dogs. It’s also in danger of flooding during big storms.
The new $21.5 million animal shelter will be built on Sleepy Hollow Road, a more central location that county leaders hope will improve access and promote more community involvement.
The new shelter will have more than 50 cat block housing units, plus isolation cages, underage kitten housing and space for feral cat surgeries.
It will have 80 dog adoption/stray dog kennels, 10 quarantine kennels, 10 dog isolation kennels and 12 small/puppy kennels. The new design also will allow for expansion based on increased needs.
Construction is expected to take about 18 months.
Along with more room for animals, the new facility will have a larger medical suite for veterinarians, which would allow for more surgeries. It also will have additional meeting and training space to carry out more collaboration with other agencies.
