The start of a dredging project near the southern point of Amelia Island is getting pushed back to later this year.

The Army Corps of Engineers says the project to remove 550,000 cubic yards of materials from the floor of the Nassau River and nearby waterways has been delayed until early October because of shorebird nests along the staging area at Amelia Island State Park.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, shorebirds are particularly sensitive to human interactions.

During the dredging project, engineers and state officials will also be monitoring for sea turtle nests along the staging area.
