Moving the Margins Presents: The Backyard

The latest Platform Performance in the Jessie Ball duPont Center’s Moving the Margins: Artist in Residence series is The Backyard, a night of performances by standouts from the city’s music scene, including rapper Mecca Tha Marvelous, Christina Elise, 10K Bird, Dejah Simone and The Goddess. Stop by for the live tunes from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and check out the work of current artist in residence, Ya La’ford, on view in the Jessie’s Corner Gallery. Free to attend. More information.

rickoLus album release show

Beginning in the early aughts with his power-pop band the Julius Airwave – a group that, barely out of their teens, garnered major-label interest – the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Richard Colado has been a fixture in the Jacksonville music scene for going on two decades. As rickoLus, Colado has released seven full-length albums and become a kind of Bruce Springsteen for the River City, penning nostalgia-filled ballads and rollicking rockers that universalize the experience of coming of age in this distinctive town. On Friday, Colado celebrates the release of his latest rickoLus album, These Things Happen, which will be available on vinyl at the show. Museum of Contemporary Art guests enjoy free admission every Saturday, and, as the museum is in the midst of its 100-year celebration, this Saturday is as good a day as any to check what’s currently on view. Of note, A Walk on the Wild Side explores an undeniably fertile time (and place) in contemporary art –1970s New York City – with works by Andy Warhol, Philip Glass, David Bowie, Yoko Ono and Robert Mapplethorpe. Meanwhile, Stacked Stars, a site-specific installation created by influential American artist Frank Stella, currently fills the museum’s atrium and is certainly worth the cost of admission, which, again, is free. Earth Day garden tour
Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens | Riverside
This coming Monday is Earth Day. And to celebrate, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is offering a weekend tour of its historic flora. Learn about the history of Cummer’s gardens and also the environmental initiatives supported by the revered Riverside arts institution. Tours are scheduled for 12:15 p.m.-1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Tickets: $10 for members; $25 for “future members.” Tickets and more information.
