It is time to pull on the gloves and wade into the garbage to clean up Jacksonville’s parks, boat ramps and neighborhoods.

The 29th annual St. Johns River Celebration is set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The event is seeking volunteers to help clean up 42 sites along the river, waterways and beaches.

The event is sponsored by the city, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful and the St. Johns Riverkeeper.

Jimmy Orth, the St. Johns Riverkeeper’s director of conservation and advocacy, said many volunteers are needed to help clean up a river that is not just in Jacksonville.   

“A lot of people don’t realize that the watershed of the St. John’s River is about 9,000 square miles,” Orth said. “There’s 13 counties that touch the river, the longest river in Florida, about 370 miles long. So what we want to do is involve the other people throughout the watershed.”

Preregistration is not required — just walk up and help clean the selected area, city officials said. All volunteers must be 18; younger helpers must be accompanied by an adult.
