Billie Jean King Cup is coming to Amelia Island

Amelia Island is the new site for an international tennis competition between top women’s players from Ukraine and Romania.

The matches, part of the Billie Jean King Cup, are set for April 12 and 13 at the Omni Amelia Island Resort’s Racquet Park.

The matches were moved to Amelia Island because of the war in Ukraine.

The Billie Jean King Cup — formerly known as the Federation Cup and Fed Cup — was launched in 1963 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation, according to its website.

The cup is now the world’s largest annual international team competition in women’s sport, with a record 110 nations competing in 2022.

The event is one of eight held around the world in April, with the winners of each advancing to the finals in November in Seville, Spain.

The qualifier begins April 12 with two singles matches, then two reverse singles matches and a doubles match on April 13.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Svitolina Foundation and the Bush-Wikse ACE Outreach Program.
