A 70-year-old Jacksonville man died early Monday on the First Coast Expressway after six vehicles hit him while he was walking in the roadway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators say the man, who was not identified, was walking north at 6 a.m. in the right lane of the state highway when he was hit the first time near Trail Ridge Road south of the Oakleaf area.

The right-side mirror of a pickup truck hit the man, who fell back onto the right lane. That is where three more cars ran him over, plus another pickup and an 18-wheeler, the Highway Patrol said.

All six drivers parked on the shoulder and stayed until troopers arrived, the Highway Patrol said. The report does not indicate why the victim was walking in the roadway.
