St. Johns County says a new segment of County Road 2209 that opened Tuesday will ease driving for people in the busy area near World Golf Village or picking up their kids from Tocoi Creek High School.
Greg Caldwell, St. Johns County’s public works director, says the new 3-mile, four-lane segment of highway connecting Silverleaf Parkway to International Golf Parkway is “a game changer for this area.”
“It’s going to change the transportation network for the northwest portion of St. Johns County,” he said during a ribbon cutting for the new roadway Tuesday.
Some of the people most affected by the change will be parents picking up or dropping off students at Tocoi Creek High School, situated right near the busy intersection of State Road 16 and International Golf Parkway.
County staff hope the new roadway will spread traffic more efficiently and help combat congestion.
A highly traveled road
Tocoi Creek is home to 2,700 students — nearly 700 of whom can drive their own cars to school, said Paul Abbatinozzi, St. Johns County Schools associate superintendent. That’s not even counting the 35 buses that service the school and the more than 200 staff members who drive to and from Tocoi Creek every day.

The new roadway also will connect to a new K-8 academy the district expects will house 1,500 more students.
“This project is going to significantly impact the arrival and dismissal process at our schools,” Abbatinozzi said.
The new roadway will get one of its first big tests Friday when Tocoi Creek’s football team hosts a home game against Orange Park’s Oakleaf High School.
