Two people are dead and two more hospitalized after gunfire erupted Monday morning in a home in the Oakleaf area, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
No motive has been uncovered as to why the 45-year-old gunman went there and began firing, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A man identified as Mauricio Vasco Lopez, 45, of Jacksonville went into the home on Pine Oaks Lane just after 6 a.m. and began shooting, Undersheriff Ron Lendvay said.
Gunfire kills one at scene
Deputies found four of the eight people there had been shot. One of the four was dead, and Lopez was critically injured, Lendvay said.
“He shot three people before a resident at the home shot him,” Lendvay said from the scene.
Lopez died at the hospital, and two victims continue to be treated in stable condition.
Police are investigating any connection Lopez had with those in the home.
No other information or identities were released as the investigation continues. Lopez had no criminal record in Clay County, according to court records. But he was arrested on Sept. 11 on charges of trespass and cocaine possession at a home on Dennis Street in Jacksonville, court records show.
The previous version of this story misspelled Lopez’s first name, based on information from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. And the story has been updated to reflect his recent arrest.
