A $25 million project aimed at reducing traffic congestion at State Road 16 and International Golf Parkway began Monday morning.
Upon completion in late 2026, the project will bring intersection improvements and an updated traffic signal at State Road 16 and International Golf Parkway, county officials say.
Another part of the project will widen State Road 16.
“We are ecstatic about moving ahead on these two critical road improvement projects,” Public Works Director Greg Caldwell said in a news release about the groundbreaking. “These improvements will reduce traffic delays, increase roadway connectivity, and enhance the safety of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians that use SR 16.”

County Commissioners approved the two-part project June 17, part of 42 transportation projects budgeted at more than $205 million in the county’s capital improvement program.
The $21.4 million part of the project includes widening the state road to four lanes from International Golf Parkway to County Road 2209, also known as St. Johns Parkway. A new intersection at the parkway and state road are planned.
The second part of the improvements, budgeted at $4.3 million, will include improvements at the intersections of State Road 16 at Stratton Boulevard and Industry Center Road. That includes new traffic signals, two median openings and signal-protected crosswalks.

The county is already working on a nearby expansion project along County Road 2209, with a new four-lane corridor between Silverleaf Parkway and State Road 16 to improve traffic flow.
Construction of the 3.9-mile construction project started in the spring of 2024. It is part of a larger rebuild of County Road 2209 that will eventually span 7.7 miles from County Road 210 to State Road 16.
The new four-lane divided highway will take a new roadway segment from Silverleaf Parkway down to International Golf Parkway, then farther down to State Road 16.
The county expects to finish the project in mid-2026.
