The Sit-In Experience: Ax-Handle Saturday

WJCT Studios | Downtown Jax

The Sit-In Experience: Ax Handle Saturday is a moving reenactment of the 1960 protest at Woolworth’s in Downtown Jacksonville, where young Black civil rights leaders staged a sit-in at an “all white” lunch counter and then suffered a violent attack in Hemming Plaza. Blending theatre, step, improvisation, a cappella music, and performances by the Ritz Voices, the production powerfully commemorates the 65th anniversary of this dark moment in local history. Following the performance, stay for a community conversation with survivors, family members and historians.
