Firefighters took the teen to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The 100 traffic deaths year surpass the 88 at this time last year. The teen was the 19th pedestrian killed.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated with detectives, Sgt. Robert Hungerford said at the scene.

Police did not know whether the teen was going home from school when the crash occurred, Hungerford said.

“I do not believe so,” he said. “It was closer to 4 p.m. It’s possible, but we haven’t gotten that far into it just yet.”

The scene of the crash is just over a quarter-mile from Biscayne Elementary School, although it is also unknown whether the victim attended there.
