A man is dead after an officer shot him Wednesday on Buckman Street in the city’s Talleyrand area, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Police say the 30-year-old man had tried to set fire to a house on East 16th Street early Wednesday, but he fled.
Officers searched for 90 minutes before an officer spotted the man, still carrying the knife. The man was ordered to stop or the officer would release his police dog.
The man fled again, but the officer drove after him until he caught up again, Chief Alan Parker said.
“As he gets out, he comes around with the Taser to engage him,” Parker said. “As he comes out, the suspect engages him, pushes the knife out toward him twice, saying get back, get back, so the officer engages, drops the Taser in the street and shoots him with his pistol.”
Officers aided the wounded man, but he died at the scene.
The police officer is an 11-year veteran, and this is his first shooting. It was the 13th shooting involving an officer this year in Jacksonville, versus eight for all of last year, police say.
