Feeding Northeast Florida just received a $750,000 grant from Walmart and Feeding America as part of a multiyear partnership to strengthen food donation efforts between food banks, agencies and retailers.
The grant was awarded to 13 food banks in the Feeding America network. It equips partners like food pantries and meal programs with equipment and staff as grocers donate fresh, frozen and shelf-stable foods.
“This grant will strengthen the capacity of our agency partners — helping us better serve our neighbors with the nutritious food and resources they need,” Feeding Northeast Florida CEO Susan King said in a news release. “We are incredibly thankful to Feeding America and Walmart for their generous support. Together, we are creating a more efficient, reliable and compassionate hunger relief system.”
Feeding Northeast Florida, the region’s largest food bank, will apply the grant to multiple needs, including agency support and more, with the remainder supporting its general fund.
The agency serves 12 counties in North and North Central Florida, including four counties through its Bread of the Mighty branch in Gainesville.
More than 310,000 people in those communities face some level of food insecurity, including 93,690 children, the agency says. That breaks down to about 1 in 7 adults, and 1 in 5 children. It is a 17% increase over last year, the agency says.
Feeding Northeast Florida says it serves more than 95,000 people per day.
The grant announcement continues 20 years of partnership between Walmart, Sam’s Club and Feeding America, with about $271 million in donations.
Walmart and Sam’s Club also havedonated more than 9 billion pounds of food to the Feeding America network of food banks and agencies since 2006.
