Brennan Asplen will be the next top boss for the St. Johns County School District.
Asplen currently serves as the district’s deputy superintendent, and the School Board chose him Tuesday after conducting a nationwide search and receiving nearly 30 applications from around Florida and the U.S.
Speaking with Jacksonville Today, Asplen said he looks forward to taking the reins.
“I’m just honored and blessed to be able to lead our district into the future,” he said. “I love St. Johns County so much. We have such good leaders and teachers, and the community and the students. I’m just elated and can’t wait to get started.”
He said ensuring community members have his ear is a top priority once he becomes superintendent.
“I really do like getting together and talking to people,” Asplen said. “I will have some more town hall meetings — some opportunities for the community to express their ideas, concerns, challenges, so we can work collaboratively together.”
Other top priorities Asplen shared were school safety, teacher retention and remaining one of the state’s top-ranked school districts.
Asplen has spent nearly 20 years working with the St. Johns County School District.
He left the district for two years in 2020 to take a job as superintendent of Sarasota County Public Schools, but he returned to St. Johns County after he was ousted by the district’s school board. Asplen said the move was all just “politics.”
The decision to pick Asplen over the School Board’s three other finalists was unanimous.
Now that the district’s next superintendent has been selected, the next step is for contract negotiations to begin. Asplen is expected to start the job July 1, in time for current Superintendent Tim Forson to retire.
