Jacksonville’s Public Works Department keeps the River City sparkling by resurfacing roads, mowing grass and handling waste — and there’s a lot of waste to manage. Our Number of the Week is the total pickups — trash, yard waste, recycling and bulk — during January alone: almost 3.5 million.

3,489,050

The city tracks how many incidents occur while picking up solid waste, and the good news is they have a pretty good track record. In January, 99.9% of the pickups were successful, and that’s typical. The 12-month average is a success rate of 99.85%.

January was a record-setting month for solid waste pickup, and December was a close second over the last 12 months.

The Public Works Department also resurfaces roads and mows grass. In the last 12 months, workers have mowed 172,484 acres and resurfaced 79.07 miles of roads.
